Alcatraz Rehabilitation & Preservation
San Francisco, California

Description

From the 1930s to 1960s, maximum security Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary housed some of the most dangerous felons. Alcatraz is one of San Francisco's most popular tourist attractions and a National Historic Landmark. After 20 years of planning, the old cell house and auxiliary elements were finally rehabilitated and preserved according to historic guidelines. The column-like west-facing pilasters were rebuilt with new steel rods and recast concrete. Deteriorating concrete and metal were removed or repaired and concrete beams were surreptitiously added to strengthen the ceiling.
