Over
100 Licensed Deputy Building Inspectors in Southern California and 70 ICBO
Certified Inspectors in Northern California are dispatched daily to jobsites
for visual and nondestructive examination on concrete, masonry, aggregates,
structural steel, welding, pipe and prefabricated units. A large number of
our inspectors are experienced in inspecting seismic upgrade projects. Our
steel inspectors often travel to fabrication shops in northern and southern
California, Arizona, Utah, Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon, Mexico, Vancouver B.C.,
Japan, South Korea and Singapore as required. Seismic
Evaluation
Under the direction of our civil engineers, technicians test all
construction material per specifications. In 1994 we tested over 60,000 concrete
cylinders.
Directed
by a licensed metallurgical engineer, we routinely provide tensile testing
with complete stress-strain plots if required; Charpy V-notch tests at
ambient or low temperature; Macro/Micro hardness testing and
photomicrography; in-situ hardness test; metallographic preparation and
evaluation; microstructural evaluations; carburized and nitrided case depth
measurement; chemical analyses; field metallographic replication and
evaluation; research and development; welder qualification/weld procedure
test; galvanized coating evaluation; and, root cause failure analysis.
>Smith-Emery Company is committed to engineering support for
all construction projects for which Smith-Emery Company has the quality assurance
responsibility. We currently have 5 Civil Engineers. Each of our projects is assigned a
cognizant Civil Engineer whose job it is to monitor all testing and inspection activities.
This service positively helps us save our clients' time and money.
We also provide testing services for building faces, tiles, marble,
granite roof materials, skylights, Jacuzzi's bathtubs and sinks. Smith-Emery is recognized
as the leader in providing testing standards for tile, marble and granite. Other
specialized testing includes Base Isolation Systems and floor flatness testing.
Our window wall/curtain wall test facility, located at our Los Angeles
headquarters, is the most sophisticated in the Western United States. Its unique
construction allows us to perform all test procedures, including air infiltration, static
water infiltration, dynamic water infiltration. structural loading, and seismic stability.
The window wall facility features computerized telemetry equipment to report test results
immediately. Field window/curtain wall testing is also conducted from our San Francisco
regional facility.
The Geotechnical Department provides preliminary soils/geology
investigation, site evaluation, soils inspection, soil foundation recommendations, bearing
values and compaction testing, as well as ecological mapping, supervision mass site
grading, pavement design, remedial grading recommendations, liquefaction studies and plant
inspection. Our soils and asphalt laboratory is fully equipped.
The Chemical Department provides a full range of analytical services,
including flow measurement, sampling and analysis of air and water. Our staff of over 20
regularly provides chemical analysis of organics and inorganics such as minerals,
fertilizers, petroleum and soils. Chemical also provides asbestos and formaldehyde
abatement services as well as hazardous waste testing and subsurface tank monitoring and
evaluation. Our chemical laboratory is fully equipped as are our mobile laboratories which
can be dispatched to any site in the Southern California area.
